Getting Started
1.
Edit your MySpace profile, and put this code in your "Headline" in addition to whatever else you have there now. This code tracks who visits your profile, who searches for you and how, and if your profile is marked private, it will show you who visits your profile, but is unable to see it.
2. E-mail (using MySpace) all people you want to track the following code (copy and paste).
A bulletin will NOT work!!
If you want to e-mail a large number of MySpace users, I recommend using
FriendTools.
3. As people begin to open up the e-mail you sent them, they will start showing up in your log.
How do I Copy & Paste?
You must know how to copy & paste in order to use Bad-Ass Tracker. If you do not know how, check out
this tutorial. Or you can search for
other tutorials.
Again, you
must know how to copy & paste to use Bad-Ass Tracker!
How to Subscribe/Renew
To subscribe or renew an existing subscription, go to the
subscription page.
Trakzor and others are free. Why do you charge for Bad-Ass Tracker?
First and foremost, we are the BEST! Secondly, TANSTAAFL. There ain't no such thing as a free lunch. Trakzor requires you to
spam your friends with bulletins advertising their product. Then they also require you to show their "You've been tracked!!!"
graphic on your profile page, which not only advertises their product (again), it also makes your visitors feel somehow violated
knowing they've been "tracked". Then when you go to their web site, you get (you guessed it) more ads! And other free trackers
operate the same way. Not to mention, some trackers are outright scams used to get your personal information for the purpose of
spamming. We will NEVER sell your personal information to anyone! In return we charge a small subscription fee of $10 in
hopes that the low cost along with word of mouth will help pay for the costs to develop and maintain Bad-Ass Tracker.
How dooes Bad-Ass Tracker track?
There are two methods that trackers can use to identify a MySpace user visiting your site:
- Storing a cookie on the user's browser. This is the most-effective method of tracking. But if the user clear's his/her cookies,
then the tracking infromation is lost.
- Recording a user's IP address and sometimes browser information as well. However, a user's IP address can change
without notice.
Bad-Ass Tracker uses both methods.
How do I send the identifcation code to a large number of friends?
Unfortunately, there is no short cut. You cannot use a bulletin. We use a tool called
FriendTools
to mass e-mail a large number of friends.
Can I use a picture of my own to use as the identification picture?
No. Currently, you must use one of our
identification pictures.
I want to identify someone without them knowing it's me
Sometimes you may want to send someone identification code without them knowing it's you sending it. Perhaps an
ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend. For situations like this, I recommend creating another MySpace account with a
default profile picture that is not your own. Then you send the e-mail with the identification code from the new
MySpace account. Of course, there is no guarantee that the user will even open the e-mail.
My friend logs on from both home and work. Can I identify them from both places?
Sure. Send the person the identification code in an e-mail both during the day, and at night too. The user must check his/her
e-mail at both places.
What do all the question marks in my log mean?
Question marks mean the user is unknown to Bad-Ass Tracker. Turning those question marks into real faces is done
by identifying the user to Bad-Ass Tracker. This can be done either by sending users identification code, or
by identifying the user by clicking on "Know Who?". Even once all your friends are identified, you will still have
users who are unknown to Bad-Ass Tracker show up as question marks. As Bad-Ass Tracker's database grows, this
will occur less and less. If you would prefer to not see the unidentified entries at all, you can turn them off
by checking the "Display known entries only" option in
Settings.
Why are some pictures in my log faded?
A faded picture is a guess based on the user's IP address. When Bad-Ass Tracker cannot positively
identify a user, and there is only guess possible, it will display the guessed user's picture, faded.
Why does a picture in the log show the person's old profile picture?
Bad-Ass Tracker caches users' profile pictures for performance reasons. If you click on the user's picture,
it will be updated then. Otherwise it will be updated by another user or Bad-Ass Tracker itself at another time.
Does a user have to be logged into MySpace to be tracked?
No. Tracking has nothing to do with whether a user is logged into MySpace or not.
Do I have to be logged into MySpace to use this web site?
No, but you really should be. If you are not logged into MySpace, when you click on a friend's picture who has a
private profile, you will get the "This profile is set to private..." message from MySpace. Also, if your own profile
is private, code generation could be affected. In short, it is highly-recommended that you be logged into MySpace
before you log into Bad-Ass Tracker.
What is "Know Who?" used for?
A "Know Who?" link will appear under every question mark or faded picture. If you know which user made the log entry,
you can click on this link and identify the user. This will identify the user who made the current log entry, and
all surrounding log entries as well.
How can I know who made an unidentified log entry?
How can I know who made an unidentified log entry?
Sometimes you will be able to manually identify an unidentified user by matching up a log entry with an e-mail or comment
sent to you by the user. Take for instance, take entry 228174 in the below log:
The date and time is "Oct 29, 2007 9:46 PM". Well in your e-mail Inbox, you see that you received an e-mail at the
same date and time:
So we can see that KRIS is the user who made the log entry. So now you need to
find KRIS 's friend
ID and then click on
"Know Who?"to identify KRIS as the user who mad the log entry.
Where can I find a user's MySpace Friend ID?
STEP 1. Go to the MySpace page of the person you are identifying. If you are trying to find
your own friend ID, go to your own MySpace page. Look at the top of your browser's window in the Address bar for the text
"friendid=". The number following the "=" sign is the person's MySpace Friend ID. In the example below, the person's friend ID is
125861700. If you do not see the person's friend ID, go onto STEP 2.
STEP 2. Click on the "View All of Friends" link. Look at the top of your browser's window in
the Address bar for the text "friendID=". The number following the "=" sign is the person's MySpace Friend ID. In the example
below, the person's friend ID is
125861700. If you still can not find the person's friend ID, go onto STEP
3.
STEP 3. Go back to the user's main profile page. Click on "View My Pics". You must be logged
in to do this! Click on the "View All of Friends" link. Look at the top of your browser's window in the Address bar for the text
"friendID=". The number following the "=" sign is the person's MySpace Friend ID. In the example below, the person's friend IS is
125861700.
What does "Guess By IP" do?
If you click on the "Guess By IP" link under a question mark, Bad-Ass Tracker will show users who have been
recorded from similar IP addresses. The entries are in date order, newest first. The reason for this is just
in case a user unplugs his/her cable modem, and receives a new IP address when he/she plugs it back in. This can
help identify when that happens.
What is "Trace" used for?
When you click on "Trace" under an IP address in your log, a traceroute is run from an arbitrary starting point, to
that IP address. We currently use the University of California at Berkeley as our arbitrary starting point.
Traceroute is a computer network tool used to determine the route taken by packets across an IP network.
The DNS host names in the output very often have geographic information in them, which sometimes can be as specific as a city
neighborhood. The country, state, and city abbreviations are typically easy to figure out.
Let's dissect the output of a traceroute to an IP address here in Jacksonville, FL:

Deerwood is a neighborhood in Jacksonville, FL
Usually, an IP address' location doesn't get as specific as a neighborhood, but sometimes it does, and Trace can be of help.
What does it mean if a search engine or bot shows up in my log?
It's mainly there for informational purposes. Search engines (like Google and Yahoo) and information-gathering bots are all over
the Internet, including MySpace. However some of these bots are e-mail address collectors for future use in spamming, so it's a
good idea to keep e-mail addresses out of your profile.
What do "School Search" and "Name Search" events mean?
It means that your profile showed up in a MySpace search. It does not mean that someone viewed your profile. If you
click on the URL for that entry, you can see the criteria used for the search.
How do I track who views my blogs?
You must paste a code snippet into each blog entry you want tracked. To do this, go to
Generate Code then click
Blog Entry Code. There you will
find the code snippet for each of your blog entries. Then you go
edit your blog and paste the code snippet for each blog entry you wish to track. It doesn't matter where you paste the code
snippet.
Important: you must click "View Source" before you paste the code snippet into the blog entry!
How do I know which blog is referred to when I see a "Viewed blog entry and comments" entry?
Click on the "URL" and you'll see which blog the user viewed.
Keeping tracking information up-to-date
The more ofen your users open up e-mails containing identification code, the more up-to-date
and accurate your tracking information will be.
Accuracy of the city/state/country shown in "Location"
We use
MaxMind for geolocation information and have no
control over the accuracy. We believe, however, that MaxMind is the best of all of the
geolocation services, which is why we chose to use them. If you want to find out more about
the accuracy, check
this page out.
Do you have to curse to sell software?
Yes.
